The Warli Typeface

Designing a typeface for an indigenous tribe as visual land acknowledgement

I created a Typeface prototype as a visual land acknowledgement for an indigenous tribe based in India; the Warli tribe. A poster of the typeface was also exhibited at MICA as part of the project. The aim is to design an actual typeface with the people from this community in their native language.

The Acknowledgement

Dwelling in the deep confines of the Aarey Forest are the Warli peoples. With solemn gratitude, we acknowledge their presence on this land since before 10th century BC. They are the faithful keepers of land that has been snatched, stolen and spilt from their people over many centuries. Today they are forced to reside in a concrete jungle that is robbing them of the remaining vestiges of the land.

This typeface is a humble offering of gratitude, inspired from the Warli art form that has been practiced since the beginning of this indigenous community, with the intention that one day, it can be developed along with the true keepers of the Aarey Forest, the Warli peoples.
